Unlike most other 'useful' creatures, many mounts don't actually require any Animal Taming skill to control or bond. If you’re interested in getting to see how your new giant tree friend came to be, you can also watch the VOD of the BlizzConline panel where the process of making the mount come to life was detailed. Game design is interesting as it is, but getting to watch the nuts and bolts of how we got from a fun community poll to a working giant tree mount? That just sounds fascinating to me. It’s a behind the scenes on an aspect of the game a lot of us take for granted - even though we collect mounts and make what we’re riding a big part of our gameplay, we don’t really know much of anything about the design process. And getting to watch the process of making it, seeing how Blizzard goes about designing a mount, that’s really cool as well. ![]() I’m personally very glad that the Wandering Ancient beat the giant ooze cat and other options, because I’m super excited to ride around in the branches of my giant tree friend and do impersonations of Treebeard from the LotR movies. Unique to the Wandering Ancient, this mount changes with the season. They even made sure the tree changes for the seasons! The Nerubian Swarmer, Gooey Slimesaber, and Curious Caterpillar ended up laying defeated in the vote by this mount, and Blizzard showed us the process of making the mount at a special panel during BlizzConline. and eventually will get yourself the cloud wing Hippogriff the final. Blizzard asked us, the players of World of Warcraft, to help them decide which of four options to make into a mount and the Wandering Ancient won the contest despite some spirited campaigning for other options. WoW Mount Farm World Tour Broken Isles Legion amount of found world tour is back. I don’t see much benefit in beating around the… bush? Is that too much of a dad joke? Well, nevertheless, if you’d like to take a peek before you get yours, Blizzard put up a preview of this mount, the result of last year’s community poll. It might be a good idea to cross your fingers or whatever particular superstition floats your boat that yours will be in a sooner group rather than a later one. ![]() With patch 9.0.5, we’ll begin seeing it in-game, but at the tail end of maintenance, they put out an announcement that the mount’s release will be staggered over “ the next few days” for all eligible accounts. It’s a giant walking tree whose leaves will change depending on the season - and it’s also the newest World of Warcraft mount. (3) Wait time (ms)/call – this shows the effect of load – the output – delivering the user experience (2) Remote calls in Progress – at any single moment – when the sample is taken – often zero (1) Remote calls/sec – this represents the server load – each call being a significant set of instructions For our investigation we need to turn on the following statistics - but remember that these numbers are each a sample of a single moment in Server’s operation (at the time the sample is taken), so turn the sample frequency in Admin Console up to every 3 seconds to get a better idea of what is happening, then turn it down again when not required since measuring anything also affects what you are measuring - in this case by creating load, so a higher frequency will slow down normal operation. The true load factor on FileMaker Server itself – ignoring for these purposes the load caused by slow networks and slow data storage i/o – is not the number of FileMaker clients but the number and frequency of remote calls, one of the 11 statistics observable in the FileMaker Server Admin Console under Statistics. These current comments apply only to FMP or FMGo connections, and not yet to WebDirect which we will test on another occasion. Hence we can send off a series of autonomous scripts (each simulating a client using server) from a single client side UI, watch the CPU history and statistics in Server Admin Console, watch the event log recording the statistics for each transaction, and load up the Server to the point of near choking by adding or disconnecting virtual clients. To investigate this we are using a method of testing FileMaker Server with “virtual clients” - server side scripts whose completion we do not await. Whilst FMI’s own technical recommendations are a good starting point they can appear more than a little conservative when compared with many people’s own experience - where often 4 cores appear to support 20 or more users. Depending on the complexity of what it is being asked to do, Server can handle quite a few calls a second, so it would be interesting to work out how many… and perhaps to relate the number of remote calls to calls per user? That is a great deal of horse-power – but we should note that FMI have reduced their recommended cores per user to about half of what they advised just a few months ago.Īnd that’s a “remote call”, not a “remote user”. ![]() fig2 – FMI Recommended Hardware Configurations for Server inc FileMaker WebDirect It is not entirely clear what resource is required if one does not plan to deploy FM Webdirect. There really is very little middle ground, so when you look at the server statistics and watch the graph crawling along the floor - thinking that you are not really using its full capacity - you may in fact be deluding yourself, as we will illustrate.Īn understanding of what server hardware resource is required to ensure that a specific number of users receive a consistently good service is clearly essential but such information is - surprisingly - a little hard to come by.įMI themselves suggest that Server – if you wish to use FM WebDirect – requires a separate CPU core - effectively a separate CPU - to handle each pair of concurrent remote calls efficiently in a smaller deployment and then gradually fewer cores as the server power and user numbers increase. fig1 – user numbers increase until Server chokes – suddenly and dramatically – with little warning. The Deskspace server performance test shown in fig 1 illustrates a common scenario as the number of users increases and suddenly performance declines – dramatically. However, Server is a binary product, in the sense that it either performs “good” or it performs “bad” - very slowly, but very reliably - as it grinds through its backlog until its load has reduced sufficiently for it to catch up on its queued calls and return to “good” mode. Why this is importantįileMaker Server 13 is a wonderful and very reliable product, provided (as with any product) you recognise, understand and work within its limits. Summary: we will describe, discuss and illustrate the statistics that enable you to understand the why and how of FileMaker Server performance and suggest means of delivering a predictable and acceptable performance to your users. ![]() Editor’s Note: Today I am pleased and honored to present the first in what I hope will become a series of articles by guest author Nick Lightbody of Deskspace Systems Ltd. So, what do I do here?Įven though there are a lot of events to partake in and tons of variety, I often found myself overwhelmed by the content. It was also a little frustrating when I was then eliminated early because I failed the challenge. I was also challenged a couple of times by another player when in Elimination mode to race to a specific point which I honestly didn't particularly enjoy because I was in finding-and-surviving mode so to be suddenly asked to race felt odd. The new Elimination mode has you trying to survive against other players as the walls around an area on the map start closing in while you hunt for cars that are dropped by giant drones. The online Arcade mode is a fun way to complete random challenges with other players if you can catch it on the map before it disappears and Event lab also allows you to create your own challenge arenas and upload them for others to enjoy. I was taken aback by some of the tracks and how they painted a picturesque landscape with staggering variety as I raced through while destroying every small tree and bush in sight. Tour racing is one way to enjoy the online mode as you're presented with a race track that does a great job of taking you through the interesting scenery of a certain area. When joining an event with online players, the experience remains mostly seamless and avoids bogging you down in menus as it instead has you drive from one location to the next which helps maintain the feeling of realism. When playing online, you'll see other players driving around the map just as in the previous title. When you visit a landmark, you can choose to complete challenges, take photos, or find items and this serves as a good excuse to explore and enjoy the hard work put into creating them.Īlthough there's still no local multiplayer, the online mode is quite seamless and can be toggled via the main menu. When you finally get another token to unlock a new festival, a ton of new events appear on the map including at least one focused on a nearby landmark. The map is split into areas that have their own little festivals going on such as one focused on stunt driving or another on dirt racing. Unlocking events is done a little differently here than in the previous instalment as you slowly unlock tokens to expand on the collection of events. Forza Horizon 5 manages to toe the line of making you feel like there's reason behind your obsession with crazy driving while not focusing too much on the story either although I must admit, I let out a couple of chuckles when I heard the announcer mention family on multiple occasions in what seems like an homage to the Fast and Furious movie franchise. It's not rare to watch short scenes where your custom-made character has a chat with a local then they both hop in the car and you drive with them to the next event. Racing in Forza Horizon 5 feels like it has more meaning due to its ability to naturally weave story into the campaign. It's all presented beautifully with great detail such as groups of people hanging out in the city as the sun sets or that you must dodge lightning strikes as you work your way through a tropical storm. Each of these areas is quite distinct in not just their visuals but also weather effects, their affinity to certain types of vehicles, and unique landmarks to enjoy. For starters, the map is 50% larger than the one in Forza Horizon 4 with an increased assortment of locations to race in such as a desert, jungle, swamp, town, beach, and ruins. Forza Horizon 5 has now been launched for us racing fans to dive into and it definitely doesn't disappoint. It's already been 3 years since the release of Forza Horizon 4 a game that I couldn't put down as I was constantly impressed by its awesome scenery, changing seasons, variety of events, and massive world. ![]() │ Like you, Video Chums despises clickbait so you won't find any divisive content or articles that fuel the console wars here. Virtual biotech companies often have few employees with hands-on clinical research experience in a particular locality, and without global affiliate offices biotech companies often have to rely on their chosen partners in assessing the benefits and risks of each country. The question as to which countries to involve for the best return on clinical trial investment is difficult to answer. More often than not the reason for requiring additional countries is to meet patient recruitment goals for larger clinical trials or challenging populations, or to ensure that partnering or out-licensing is initiated when required in the business pipeline. However, given the fact that many of these biotech companies can be ‘virtual’ in nature, geographically removed from the region and may have relatively little or no experience of running trials within these regions, there may be a number of pitfalls to avoid during clinical trial execution. This finding, coupled with the rising cost of drug development, has led many biotech companies to look towards central and eastern Europe (CEE), Russia and Ukraine as a solution to their clinical trial needs and the increased competition for investigational sites in the established European Union (EU) member states. With the death of their leader and disruption of his communications system, the Aztec attack faltered. It was reported that Cortes himself dispatched the High Priest with his lance. The charge succeeded in killing the High Priest and many of his officers. While the hooves of the Spanish cavalry were previously unable to make such a charge on the smooth pavements of Tenochtitlan – at Otumba, they were able to make a classic cavalry attack. The Aztecs had never before faced a massed cavalry attack. Cortes personally rounded up what remained of his cavalry and with great personal courage led a mounted charge towards the High Priest and his retinue. This High Priest was using signalers and bannermen to coordinate the attacks. He was the one who was acting as the Aztec General. The brutal end was near when Cortes noticed that the attacks were being coordinated by the cihuacoatl, the High Priest of Tenochtitlan, the Cihuacoatl Matlatzincátzin. The Aztecs rained missile fire upon the Spanish, and subjected them to numerous human wave attacks. They took up an infantry square position bristling with pikes and halberds upon on the rocky outcropping overlooking plains. They were just short of the mountain pass that would bring them to safety of Tlaxcala. The Conquistadores found themselves on a small rocky outcropping – and according to Diaz nearly surrounded on two sides. All of the Spanish were wounded to some degree – many died each day from the wounds suffered during La Noche Triste and the subsequent skirmishes that occurred as the Aztecs, under Cuitlahuac, pursued them mercilessly. ![]() This is another scenario that has been popular.įor almost two weeks, the troops under Cortes retreated across central Mexico – hoping to reach the safety of Tlaxcalan territory. This scenario lasts 10 turns.īelow are the pics – as memory serves, the Spanish held on to a victory. This is a generic scenario based on Aztecs launching a surprise raid Veracruz or a Tlaxcalan Village serving as a supply base for Cortes. Unbeknownst to the Aztecs, there are some Spanish troops at this town who will help to defend it. The Aztecs know the majority of the Tlaxcalan troops are with the Conquistadores elsewhere, and expect an easy task. Near harvest time, a Tlaxcalan village is being raided by the Aztecs, seeking to take wealth, food, and prisoners. There is a lifecycle for activities in the Android operating system, defined by six callbacks: onCreate(), onStart(), onResume(), onPause(), onStop(), and onDestroy(). An activity provides a window for building the user interface using classes based on the View class. An activity represents a single, focused task that a user can do. The Android operating system is based on the idea of components and uses the terms activity and intent to define interactions. Without its remote the K40 Calibre is helpless. Unlike most consumer electronics with remote controls, televisions for example, there are no backup controls. I later found it under the passenger seat. The first time I went to change the audio volume, it had already disappeared. I couldn't find a suitable, perfectly-flat mounting spot and left it in a cubby hole at the top of the center stack. Power, manual mute, audio volume and three operating modes, city, highway and mute, are controlled by a small wireless transmitter that measures about one-inch-square.Īccording to the installation instructions, the remote can be mounted using the supplied double-sided tape or left loose. There's no control/display unit (one's available as a no-cost option). The radar antenna looks the same, but now has an extra module on one end to accommodate its Bluetooth gadgetry. The K40 Calibre's major components look pretty much like those of the K40 2000P model. But no matter, forget about advertising hyperbole and let's look at the product. The Spectre RDD can sniff out the K40 Calibre at a considerable distance. But that was obsolete by the mid-nineties and it has rapidly been supplanted by the vastly superior Spectre (aka Stalcar) RDD detector detector. True, it's immune to the 1990-vintage Technisonics Interceptor The words "stealthy" and "stealth" also appear prominently in promotional material and on the company website. K40 calls the Calibre an "undetectable" radar detector. In all, a remarkable performance from what may be the best custom-installed radar detector. On daily commutes it rarely goes off and is nearly as quiet on highway trips. The Escort laser jammer system worked equally well, jamming some of the guns down to point-blank range and doing almost as well against the rest. At the Hill/Curve Test Site it was Escort Passport 9500ci: 1,655 feet, K40 Calibre (rear antenna): 867 feet. The K40 Calibre, using its rear antenna, spotted it at 5,160 feet. Yet the Escort Passport 9500ci outperformed it at both test sites using its forward-facing antenna-while driving away from the radar guns.įor example, at the Straightaway Test Site the Escort Passport 9500ci detected the 34.7 (GHz) Ka-band radar coming from behind at 7,240 feet. K40 trades heavily on the notion that a rear antenna is necessary to spot radar coming from behind. That included time spent fabricating and painting two mounting brackets for the front jammers, as the factory jobs were less than ideal for the miniscule mounting area offered by our mail box-sized Honda. Installing the Escort Passport 9500ci took eight hours. The K40 Caliber offers the same option although its LED is a single color. For a low-profile installation a bi-color LED can be mounted in the instrument cluster, replacing the display. Fortunately, the system powers-up when the car is started and shuts off automatically as well.Ī small LED display shows operating mode and other vital information. The power switch is tough to find and tougher to operate. It's backlit, making the important buttons easy to find and use at night. The Escort Passport 9500ci is a departure from previous Escort remote systems since it uses GPS technology to limit false alarms.Īll operations are handled by a thumb-sized surface-mounted control unit. Over a month-long period I field-tested both for performance and also logged 2,000 miles with each in a combination of city and highway driving. The arrival of the Escort Passport 9500ci allowed an opportunity to see if K40's bold claims for the K40 Calibre and the K40 Defuser EX would hold water.
